What Happens in San Diego Part 2

Part 2 of our San Diego Adventures recap begins the morning of July 9, 2015.  By that point, my sister had mostly recovered from her bout with food poisoning and was anxious to get to Qualcomm Stadium for the reason we’d come to San Diego in the first place: seeing One Direction in concert.  The parking lot opened at noon and we decided to get there as soon as possible to get a good parking spot.  I’d never driven to a concert before.  In the past, friends and I had always taken public transportation or had a parent drop us off.  This was a whole new adventure for me.

Still, we were awake so early that we decided we had a bit of time to explore the area before our stake out in the Qualcomm parking lot.  We decided to head to La Jolla Beach.

It was AMAZING.  I got to hang out with wild sea lions in their natural habitat.  We also saw pelicans and baby seagulls.

Yes, I took a LOT of pictures.  And that’s not even all of them.  Although I do have to tell you, right before we left, I decided to take a few last pictures of this one particularly photogenic sea lion.  As I was shooting (with my telephoto lens), this beautiful sea lion throws up a whole fish.  Just projectile vomits all over the place.  The seagulls were very happy.  I was not.  There’d already been more than enough regurgitation for one trip.

Anyway, aside from puking sea lions, La Jolla Beach itself is just absolutely gorgeous.

We also met a local artist named Paul Strahm.  He was a delightful person, and very happy to meet two young people involved in the arts. I bought one of his paintings of La Jolla.  You can check out his website here: http://www.paulstrahmpaintings.com/Home.html

Finally – and I know this is what you’ve all been waiting for – THE ONE DIRECTION CONCERT!

My sister and I arrived at Qualcomm right at noon.  Good thing too, because there was already a line of cars waiting to get in and find a parking spot.  After parking and snacking on what may or may not actually pass for a lunch, we got out, walked around the stadium, and visited the merchandise table.

11180637_10204782581060149_6450908042310195429_n

I guess could tell you about the seven hours spent loitering around the parking lot, but honestly, they’re weren’t that interesting.  I’ll just skip to the concert itself.

Long story short, the One Direction boys put on a quality show.  The crowd was electrifying and enthusiastic.  These fans go out of their way to show their love for their boys.  And I think those guys have earned it.  They work hard and their songs are great.  I’ll tell you this as well: Seeing 1D in concert provided a lot of inspiration for the next Boy Band novel!  I even know what the title will be now!

After the concert ended, my sister and I ended up sitting an additional hour and thirty minutes in that godforsaken parking lot while everyone tried to get out.  I really don’t want to talk about that.

Fast forward to Friday morning, our last day in San Diego.  This was a day of mixed blessings.  First, we headed back to Balboa Park to visit the San Diego Art Museum.  They had a Coney Island exhibit going on, which my sister and I both really wanted to see.

unnamed

What’s really neat is that in Boy Band, the guys in the band shoot a music video at Coney Island.  Needless to say, I was incredibly eager to see the display.

As it turned out, however, the exhibit was only open to members of the museum.  It would be open to the public beginning the next day, but my sister and I were flying out in 8 short hours.  It just so happened that a very nice lady and her friend overheard our dilemma and let us into the exhibit as her guests.  I couldn’t believe it.  She was so incredibly sweet.  I know it made both KJ’s and my day.

After we visited the museum, we ate lunch and drove around a bit.  Unfortunately, I accidentally left my cherished camera at the cafe where we ate, so we had to drive twenty minutes back to University and Park to reclaim it.  There was no way I was leaving California without it!  I had pictures of blue whales on that camera! Not to mention, that camera has been everywhere with me.  It’s practically family.

After the camera debacle, my sister and I decided to head back to the airport, you know, quit while we were ahead.  That almost worked out.  We returned the car without a hitch and made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare.  Of course, while in line to check our bags, I discovered that my piddly little bank account had been hacked.  Someone got ahold of my card number and used it to buy $500 worth of movie tickets.  I’m sure I don’t need to explain this to y’all, but I’m an independent author.  I am poor.  As if the airport wasn’t stressful enough, I also had to deal with some loser hacking into my bank account.  I’m not going to lie to you. I cried a little.

Thankfully, everything is being taken care of.  I have a new card and the bank WILL reimburse me everything that I lost.

Our San Diego adventure finally ended with a delayed flight and a minor battle with air-travel panic.  I don’t like flying.  In fact, I kind of hate it.  I’d much rather be on the ground.  Or on a boat.  I really love boats.  But flying?  Nope.  Planes are too tiny and too crowded and turbulence?  No.  I don’t even want to talk about it.  My airplane anxiety is the one character trait that I passed on to both my female protagonists, Kate and Mel.  I didn’t mean to.  It was a total coincidence.  But it’s just my natural reaction to flying.  I get panicked, so my characters get panicked.  It’s the one thing all three of us have in common.

San Diego, it was (mostly) fun, but I’m happy to be home.  I’m a Texas girl at heart.  Give me open roads and open skies any time.  Though I do miss the ocean.  And that baby blue slug bug.

Oh, and one more thing…

The Kind of September also went to California!  They loved it.

In the Bleak Midwinter

Christmas is in six days.  My general rule of thumb is that I like the cold and the gray and the winter weather (or at least pretend to) until Midnight on December 26.  Once Christmas is over, I can go back to openly hating the winter chill as much as I darn well please.

Okay, so there are a few things I like about winter.  I like hot chocolate.  I like snuggling with blankets.  I love Christmas.  And I actually do like snow as long as I don’t have to drive in it.  It’s pretty.

734964_4642977106073_488207557_n

Ice can even be pretty.

1497621_10201945096282666_1138988005_n

The only problem with pretty scenes like this is that they come with temperatures like this…

1459079_10201945097642700_763033170_n

That is too cold.  When it’s that cold outside, my face often looks like this…

1966899_10204306554117636_4921447604015721414_n

Or more accurately, like this…

268597_2158434194053_4469371_n

Every year I start off thinking that I really do like the cold.  I was born in the dead of winter, in the middle of a snow storm.  I feel like I should like I owe it to winter to try to like it.  But once the initial Yay-It’s-Cold-Outside-I-Can-Wear-Boots-And-Scarves excitement wears off, winter gets really old really fast.  The worst part is IT’S NOT EVEN TECHNICALLY WINTER YET AND I’M ALREADY SICK OF IT.  As far as boots and scarves go, guess what?!  I wear boots and scarves all year round!  I’m a writer who lives in Texas!  Boots are a given and scarves are kind of a thing for some of us.

I’m beginning to feel, in a weird kind of way, that by professing my “love” for winter and denying my love for all things summer, I’m in a way denying a part of myself.  I’m supposed to be listening to Christmas music, but I’ve been sneaking listens to my summer iTunes playlist for the past two weeks.  Even as I write this, I’m singing along to Summertime Guys from the movie Aquamarine.

But when you think about it, all of this is really to be expected.  I’m from the South.  Southern girls love summer. We thrive on sunlight and open-toed-shoes and the smell of coconut sunscreen.  Summertime is also the time for colors and being outside and swimming and flowers.  Honestly, how could it not be my favorite season?

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 2.49.54 PM

In my mind, summer equals freedom, and as a writer, as a creative mind in general, freedom is all that I want.  It’s all I’ve ever wanted.  Winter is fine, but I so often feel confined and limited in the cold and the gray.  And come on, shoes?  Who actually likes having to wear shoes?  My feet, like the rest of me, like to be free.  One of my favorite memories is of my first Fourth of July working as a summer camp counselor.  My co-workers and I spent the evening at our friend’s lake house and as the sun set, we ran around playing Ultimate Frisbee in our summer clothes and bare feet.  It was the best Fourth ever.

Winter, I guess, reminds me too much of the real world.  Summer is a fantasy.  It’s a time for adventure.  It reminds me of what I want out of life: mountains and oceans and gardens and hiking and swimming and running and forests and open fields of tall grass and flowers.  I realize I must sound like the biggest hippie right now, but that is what my soul craves.  That’s what it needs to survive.  If I can’t have that during the winter months, I at least need my summer music and pictures to keep me going.  Of course, I have my writing also, which definitely frees me, but I also like to experience these freedoms and moments for myself.  It’s not enough to just write them.  You’ve got to live them too.

So for the next six days, I will love and savor what’s left of Christmas, but in the back of my mind, I’m still anticipating the summer sun.

Redwood Wanderings

When I planning my trip to California, my lifelong best friend Hannah asked me what I wanted to do once I got out there.  I had several things in mind, but something I really wanted was to spend more time with the redwoods.  I’d seen them once for about five minutes.  It was awesome, but it really wasn’t enough time at all.

I love hiking and I love forests and the redwoods are nothing short of magical.  Just being there, you can sense how old they are, how long they’ve stood.  It’s almost eerie thinking about how much they’ve witnessed and how short our lifespans are in comparison.

The redwoods are perfect for sparking the imagination.  I envisioned witches gathering in the groves and fairies flitting about through the sunbeams.

We ended our time with the redwoods by driving to one of the neighboring beaches for a quick stroll.  It was lovely, but the entire time, I felt my thoughts drifting back to the forest.  Odd, since I love water and the beach probably more than just about anything.

California Bound

Hi, friends!

Well, after writing that lovely post about getting back to work and being a responsible adult… I’m off to California!  My best friend from high school lives out in San Francisco, so I’m going to spend a few days out there, seeing sea lions, drinking wine, and having an all around good time. I’ve been once before and had an awesome time.

I’m especially excited this year to visit some new places, especially the Marine Mammal Center. Although one of my goals is to become a New York Times best-selling author by the time I’m 30, marine life will always be my first love.

Well, I’m going to continue writing as much as I can today, though I will be setting my books aside in order to pack and prepare for the journey to San Francisco tomorrow.  I hope you all have a great rest of the week!

Where the Music Meets the Ocean

Note: I apologize for the onslaught of photographs.
Also, the title of this blog post is a lyric to a song by the Zac Brown Band called Jump Right In. It was pretty much all we listened to on this trip.

Last week, my sister and I went to the beach. It was awesome.

The only downside was that we stayed in a hotel with no wifi. Yes, those still exist.

The good news was that there was a Jurassic Park marathon on all week.

But enough about hotels. The trip itself was amazing. We spent a morning at Fort Morgan, a civil war site. It was also used in the first world war.

For the record, if you ever eat at Lulu’s, they will give you the option of waiting a really long time to be seated or being seated immediately at one of the bars. Guess which option we took?

Also, Lulu’s is owned by the sister of the one and only Jimmy Buffett! How cool is that?

On the trip, we also saw hibiscuses and dolphins.

I’d actually been complaining throughout the entire trip that I just wasn’t seeing any herons. Then, our last night there, we hung out at the big fishing pier and saw no less than five great blue herons! I was very happy.

The rest of the time, we just kicked around the beach, which to be honest, was my favorite part.

Honestly, there is no place I’d rather be.

Beach Week!

Dear friends and fellow bloggers,

I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I will be absent for the next week, as my sister and I are traveling to the BEACH.

Yes, I am bragging. But I also like to keep updated with you all as much as I can, and a week is a long time to go without posting. So there you go. Bragging is justified.

After I get back from the beach, I will have a day to relax and recharge before I head off to Oklahoma for a paranormal convention. Busy, busy, but lots of fun, and hopefully I will sell a few books and make a few new connections!

However, I will be keeping up with my Twitter and Instagram. If you have either, please follow me and I will happily follow you back!

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I know I’ve talked about my time spent in Scotland on this blog before.  Lately, however, I’ve been thinking a lot specifically about my time spent on Iona, otherwise known as St. Columba’s Sacred Isle.

Iona is amazing.  Anyone who doesn’t believe that fairy tales exist, clearly has never ventured to the Iona, or any part of Scotland for that matter.  It has the most beautiful white beaches, crystal blue waters, lofty hills, windswept meadows, and the most fantastic celtic crosses, some of which are centuries old.

Sometimes on Iona, chickens just walk down the side of the road.

As magical as Iona is during the day,  it was equally captivating at sunset.

One of my favorite moments on Iona wasn’t spent on the beach or hiking the hills.  It was one evening in the hostel after dinner.  Of all the hostels we stayed at in Scotland, Iona’s was the one that felt the most like home.  That evening, we’d made a home-cooked meal, a luxury we hadn’t been able to enjoy at any of the other hostels.  Don’t get me wrong, their food was fine, but it sort of reminded me of cafeteria food.  On Iona, however, we prepared our own meal and cleaned up afterword.  It was the sort of thing I never enjoy at home, but somehow, in that cozy island setting, it was like a scene straight out of a novel.

After we finished clean-up, a small group of us gathered around in the den.  The den was right next to the dining area.  It had a few bookshelves and a small nook next to a giant window that overlooked the vast fields leading down to the shore.  Jeb, the leader of the group and our youth minister, brought out his guitar and started strumming.  My sister and I each settled down onto one of the couches with the books we’d purchased at the airport (yes, we took our own books, but really, who can resist an airport bookstore?).  She read Matched by Ally Condie.  I’d selected Insatiable by Meg Cabot.

I actually really enjoyed it.  Sadly, the sequel did not end the way I wanted it to.  Oh well.  You can’t win them all.

Jeb played a number of songs that evening, but the only one I remember is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”  I remember it because every one of us in the room stopped what we were doing to sing along.  It was just one of those magical moments.  No computer.  No television.  Nothing but pure simplicity.  Books, music, comfortable couches, and a sunset over the sea.  I don’t think I’ve ever been more content.

Taking a Break

Last week, my best friend and I took a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Long story short, it was everything I like in a vacation; beachy, Southern, relaxing, and just a good time.  I thought that since I have no news regarding the search for literary agents except that I’m still looking, I’d share some pictures from the trip!

I suffered a skinned knee, wrist, and swollen ankle for this picture. But there’s a baby dolphin, so it was all worth it.

Tacky Jacks is an Orange Beach landmark. If you go to the Gulf Shores, you need to eat here.

My personal tribute to the movie version of “A Walk to Remember.” Straddling the state line between Florida and Alabama, I’m in two places at once!
